The Shift Boss: Mining is accountable for the coordination of all relevant mining activities as set out in the mining plan.

This person is accountable for:

Coordinating and monitoring mining activities to ensure adherence to mine standards and operational targets. Supervision and operational control of underground crusher chambers, apron feeders, conveyor belts and shafts loading stations. Supervising and coordination of ground handling activities in order to achieve daily, weekly and monthly production targets Planning of all mining activities in accordance with mining and other schedules and allocating resources as required. Coordinating shift hand over by checking relevant documentation, the required physical mining activities and available resources, and communicating these to team members of the relevant mining crew. Performing identified administrative duties according to legal and procedural requirements.

Job Description

  • Pursue and drive a culture of zero harm and ensure all aspects of the work are completed in adherence to the De Beers’ Safety, Health, Security and Environmental standards and systems.
  • Implement safety, health, environmental and security programs to ensure adherence to relevant policies and procedures.
  • Prioritise and assign work to allocated resources to ensure delivery of the mining plan to the required standards within the correct timeframes.
  • Gather and analyse relevant information arising from mining activities to compile reports according to departmental procedures and requirements.
  • Accountable for managing the individual and team performance of the relevant mining crew on site.
  • Order and monitor material levels to ensure sufficient availability according to operational needs.
  • Communicate operational information and changes to relevant stakeholders to minimise delays in mining activities.
  • Continuously analyse relevant mining activities to recommend or implement improvements and changes to maximise outputs.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders of various mining processes to ensure operational optimisation and efficiency.
  • Recommend and incorporate cost saving initiatives into budgets and control expenditure within approved parameters.
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations according to organisational standards.
  • Monitor adherence of service providers according to the scope of work as determined in service level agreements.

Qualifications

Formal qualifications:

  • Grade 12 / N3 / Equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Blasting Certificate for Underground Hard Rock / Equivalent Qualification
  • Underground Shift Boss certificate
  • A Supervisory qualification would be advantageous
  • Onsetters Certificates advantageous

Additional requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years underground mining experience of which at least 2 years must have been as a Shift Supervisor / Controller
  • Code B Driver’s License
  • Required classification as per VTS testing for specific role Orange
  • Medical Certificate of Fitness to work underground
  • Computer Literacy

Role-specific knowledge:

  • Underground mining practices and related operations environment
  • Safety, Health and Environmental Legislation and standards applicable to underground mining
  • Underground ground handling systems, boxfronts, chutes, crushers, conveyor belts, apron feeders
  • Blasting below engineering infrastructure
