Job Description

You will be responsible to prepare the annual operational plans for the Forestry Pruning portfolio and manage the day to day oversight of labour, equipment and materials used to deliver a variety of arboricultural services to residents of Edmonton.

In this role, you will:

  • Supervise and mentor a team of Urban Foresters and Crew Leaders and Field Operations staff to deliver corporate goals
  • Work closely with other Urban Forestry Leaders to provide an integrated leadership approach to Urban Forest Management Best Practices
  • Work closely with the Management Supervisor of Forestry Operations to plan, deliver and monitor monthly work plans, budget and variances in alignment with annual targets and expected outcomes. Ensure that the operational work plan is implemented and monthly goals and targets are met
  • Develop and implement best practices related to tree pruning, removals and general tree maintenance
  • Develop and oversee quality control programs for all pruning related work including the in-house tree pruning and contract pruning
  • Oversee the stump grinding schedule and routing
  • Oversee the Decorative Tree Lighting Program
  • Oversee the Forestry Transportation Team
  • Oversee storm call response
  • Ensure compliance with safe operating procedures, and inspire dedication to build and maintain a safe work environment
  • Review operation work schedules to ensure maximum utilization of assigned staff, equipment and facilities
  • Use appropriate methods and interpersonal styles to develop, motivate, and guide the pruning team to attain successful outcomes and business objectives
  • Interpret and implement the Corporate Tree Policy in conjunction with the Supervisor of Forestry
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, administration and Council in regards to business area focuses
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year Technical Diploma in Urban Forestry, Landscaping or an arboriculture related field, OR Journeyperson Landscape Horticulturist Certificate. Equivalencies in education and experience may be considered
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Arboriculture with a minimum of 2 years supervising staff
  • Strong technical, functional, and professional knowledge and skills in Arboriculture; knowledge of current developments, innovation and trends in Arboriculture
  • ISA Certified Arborist
  • TRAQ Certified or experience with Risk Assessment and documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Word, Excel, Google Docs, Gmail and SAP
  • Familiar with AINSI Standards and Arboriculture Best Management Practices
  • Strong Customer Service Skills

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
